unneccesary police shooting

I’m searching for the video to corroborate…

UPDATE: The video hasn’t been released, but the mainstream press is all over this story. Without releasing the video, the AP described the stand-off as a 3 minute exercise of the police attempting to talk down the man before they opened fire more than six times, killing him.

UPDATE II: Here’s the video. The guy didn’t seem to want to give up his knife, but did they really have to shoot him dead?

A handgun is no good farther than a few meters away.
If someone has a knife, a bat, brass knuckles, etc. I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot them.
Knives are just as deadly as guns at times.

i agree, but that guy was a big dude, with meaty legs. it just seems as though they could’ve popped him a few times in those trunks to take him down.

In France, this kind of “accident” is not possible: it’d be scandalous. And I agree… it’s a shame to shoot a man this way!

It is not police policy in any city to shoot someone in the leg, hands, arms or any of the other stuff you see in the movies. If and when you shoot, you shoot to “Stop the threat.” As long as he has the knife he is a threat to the police and anyone else standing around. What if he decides to run away? What if you’re walking in the next block not knowing about this guy and he runs up to you and stabs you with the knife. I would bet someone would blame the police for not stopping this guy.

so how would this guy be running away if he’s being popped in his legs? “stop the threat” sounds like a policy of absolute advancement. pop the guy in his leg, if he keeps advancing, back up while popping him in the other leg, if he keeps advancing, keep popping him down low. unless he’s on angel dust, he’s going down. and if he doesn’t, then pop him in the chest.

that doesn’t seem unreasonable, does it?

the police have other (non-lethal) options availible to them for this type situation. There are tazers, pepper spray and dogs or water hoses that could have been deployed.
I agree that this man (if armed with a knife) represents a deadly threat to himself, all of the officers and the general public. However making a decision to end someone life should not be done in haste, should not be done with fear but only when the officer see’s “no other way out.”
If you have ever been on the seen of a police shooting, you will find that the officers fire first (thats fine) and that the other officers get scared and or freak out or something and bullets fly every where. This is where a lot of officers get injured in the line of duty.
When your police officer have a fear of certain demographic groups, scared about doing the job they should quit.

Fists are just as deadly as guns sometimes…. so, let’s shoot anyone that raises a fist.

The last trait I’m looking for in a cop is being scared of anything that seems like a threat.

See, it is just one knife and it’s just one guy. If any attempts to stop the guy would’ve hurt a cop, yeah, well… then perhaps it is a reason to shoot him.

It’s insane that a law prohobits me to kill, say, George W. Bush for all the stuff he might do in the future (now that’s a crazed, coked-out guy with a handgun for ya)… but it’s OK for any cop to splatter the brains of anyone that seems a threat all over the damned pavement.

Oh well, at least this guy wasn’t just reaching for his wallet — things are looking brighter.

This type of news only further acknowledges the view that American cops are too trigger-happy. Fact of the matter is, getting hurt comes with the territory of being a cop; especially if you have to enforce in these insane undemocratic times.

If you can’t handle the heat stay out of the kitchen — but I guess all that bribe-money must really be worth it. ;)

Let’s be frank and honest. This man is dead because he is Black. The fact that he had a knife and was a large man are irrelevant. Were he white or Asian, with a knife, he would have been pepper sprayed or talked down, or cops would have talked to him until his girlfriend/wife or someone else came on the scene.

America if full of racism, let’s be real and admit. Now he’s dead!! He probably either had a mental problem or was stressed out. What black man in America wouldn’t be stressed out??

  9. 9 sean coon

hard to disagree with that perspective.

i completely agree with GLOBAL PEACE WARRIOR. my life isnt worth nearly as much as the aforementioned groups in america. that’s the way this system is setup. hell, some people that look like me dont value my life.

    1. Most cops need to shoot the body because they cant be seen by thier buddies to miss something like a leg.

    2. Hes black, gunmen white.

    3. you shoot a man holding an auto 6 times not a knife.

    4. I would panic if a cop from that state pointed a gun at me.

    5. In england they would take him down with tasers, battons and spray; if absolutely necessary use a single shot.

    6. Only one officer should be using verbal communication to avoid panic and confusion.

    oh well
