and to tweak my “get it” comment… obviously, we all “get it” on various levels, to various degrees regarding various subjects. every day i add to my sense of “getting it” and find out the next day that there’s so much more for me to “get”… that’s what i love about life, and especially artistic endeavors. subjectivity is like a nice dip in the river… now when you connect with other people’s object subjectivity, that’s where things get interesting.

I long ago let go of that feeling of dissapointment when someone walked away from a movie with different experience from mine. I now relish those rare moments in which I speak to someone regarding cinema and I discover that they are also a fan of Akira Kurosawa or even Sergio Leone and I then wallow in the comfort of being in the presence of some who "gets it". In 1985 I dragged a bunch of my friends to downtown L.A. to see Brazil, this was back when downtown L.A. still had theaters that actually showed movies. Needless to say after viewing it none of my friends liked the movie. I had already seen the movie 3 or 4 times and was enthralled by the retro-futuristic, anti-utopian, Orwellian images, so when I tried to explain to my friends that the movie required multiple viewings in order to be better understood and appreciated, one of them commented that I was responsible for dragging them to see "The Gods Must Be Crazy" the previous year and that pretty much denied me the ability of ever choosing a movie on the groups behalf.
