Colin Powell (.pdf):

[…] “The world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism” […]

White House reporter last Friday:

Mr. President, former Secretary of State, Colin Powell, says “The world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism.”

If the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Secretary of State feels this way, don’t you feel that Americans and the rest of the world are beginning to wonder whether you’re following a flawed strategy?

President Bush:

“If there’s any comparrison between the compassion and decency of the American people and the terrorist tactics of extremists, it’s flawed, flawed logic. It’s just, it’s just, I simply can’t accept that. It’s unnaceptable to think that there’s any kind of comparrison between the United States of America and the action of Islamic extremists who kill innocent women and children and to understand, to ah, to achieve an objective.” […]

Don’t you love how President Bush hides behind the compassion and decency of us, the American people, in order to segue into a defense of his administration? I love how he says that it’s unnaceptable to think that we are fighting a flawed and immoral fight against terrorism, as if we have any say in the matter whatsoever.

As for his administration’s war, here are the facts:

Man, those are some seriously evil, rhetorical skills President Bush is flexin’ about. People really need to stop calling this man an idiot. He’s not. He’s an evil genius. Too bad for him and his neo-con buddies we’re all starting to call him on this type of shit.

Keith Olbermann wasn’t enunciating as clearly in October of 2002 — when President Bush urged us, the American people, to call our congressmen to back the invasion of Iraq — as he has these past few weeks. Thankfully, he seems to have found his groove:

This president has no shame, whatsoever.

OMG, somebody needs to get GB2 to a brow waxer! Doesn’t he have minions to focus on those details? Honestly, you could have chosen a more flattering photo, Sean.

Did I miss something? Was Colin Powell beheaded and the act videoed and circulated for private citizen’s to view in warning? Do we not still have the freedom to SAY what we feel is unacceptable to think!!!! I am tired of the extremist who report and lash out against our country. The emotional manipulation, and biased reporting in all forums.
And I am tired of requested apologies from everyone from the Pope to the President. I also believe it is unacceptable to THINK there is a comparrison between the USA and the Terrorist! So shoot me!

relax on the shoot me stuff. i hear you without the hyperbole.

“Did I miss something? Was Colin Powell beheaded and the act videoed and circulated for private citizen’s to view in warning? Do we not still have the freedom to SAY what we feel is unacceptable to think!!!!”

    interesting.

it seems as though you feel the only forms of influence leadership has on the direction of our country (and its impact in the world) are by explicit acts — that their words don’t hold any influence or repurcussions leading to such explicit acts.

powell said that he feels that “the world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism.” obviously, that perspective is based on a number of explicit acts by our government, which includes torture (abu ghraib & covert locations), what amounts to abductions (guantanamo) and a war in iraq, which by pres. bush’s account, had no tie to 9/11.

when the press reporter posed his question to bush — adding if powell sees these patterns as a former top cabinet member in the bush administration, wouldn’t bush be concerned that average americans/people around the world might feel the same — president bush hid behind the morality of us to dodge the question and excuse his strategy on the war on terror.

if you think that’s fine, then you’re in the camp that feels that the war, abu ghraib and guantanamo are all good strategic moves in this so-called war on terror.

i happen to think they’re all war crimes, but i can agree to disagree.

and sheila, i don’t know of what bias you speak. if you’re referring to this blog, well, i’m not reporting; i’m giving my opinion.

and just like assholes, we all have ‘em. ;-)

I do think that when crimes such as those at abu ghraib and guantanoma are discovered they should and will be punished, and I am aware that even within our borders are “extremists” etc., but I do trust that we make efforts to correct and move forward. As far as objectives to the war, well I have plenty of questions. I think as a “whole” or as a “country”, it is offensive to me to be labeled or put in the same catagor, as the “terrorist” or to hear of our leadership accused of those same objectives.
I am not referring to your site, my response was (allbeit an emotional one) to the video, and it is hard to find information without all the attacks and accusations, and I am guilty of not having the time to pursue the information available, although I do have a goal to improve.
I am thankful that we will have the chance to choose another coarse at election time if we so choose as a country. I appreciate the debates and opinions of both sides, and I think it’s important to hear!!, and to have an opinion. I think it a larger crime to have none. I by no means feel I am equiped to engage.

thanks for the thoughtful response, sheila.

    regarding your first point,

“I do think that when crimes such as those at abu ghraib and guantanoma are discovered they should and will be punished…”

the problem we have is zero congressional oversight. even staunch republican pundits are calling for a democratic majority now, just so the system has a chance of working and the executive branch can be held in-check (if not accountable) to their many violations of law.

but in the here and now, rumsfeld refuses to step down (even after the sickness of abu ghraib and the many mistakes with iraq), the supreme court has ruled guantanamo illegal, so the president is trying to enact law that simply makes it legal. the same thing goes for torture, as he’s now trying to fiddle with the geneva convention to suit our needs.

the geneva convention. that’s worked fine for the world until now. what has changed with the human condition over the past 5 years that necessitates more specificity of degrees of torture?

but i do hope you re-read powell’s statement, the question by the reporter and the president’s response. your statement:

I think as a “whole or as a “country, it is offensive to me to be labeled or put in the same catagor, as the “terrorist or to hear of our leadership accused of those same objectives.

we wouldn’t even be discussing this if president bush didn’t avoid the question. but he did. he called on our morality and then he drew the comparrison between terrorists and the american people. that’s on him.

his own answer tells us everything we need to know about “our” war on terror — he’s too afraid to respond to the direct question with a direct answer, and in essense, smack a guilty stamp on his forehead (i wish i could’ve found that image ;)

and no worries, i’ll get you on bloglines soon enough. i’ve just been crazy busy. ;-)

Thanks for you reply. I will re-read tonight it when I have time to ponder and really think about your response! It gives me a good base to seek out some important questions.

i look forward to hearing if your perspective shifts a bit.

    This is bullshit.
Have you seen what U.S. troops have been doing in Iraq? We kill innocent men, women, and children too.

Most terroists have been trained by western goverments for the intension of creating the “problem reaction solution” theory
