quick thought... October 4th, 2006 - 12:19PM

New instant messages provided by former Congressional pages contradict some of what Foley’s lawyer said in an attempt to build a defense.

It never ceases to amaze me how much power corrupts. It’s even more amazing how the GOP in spite of mounting evidence continues to dig deep and staunchly defend Foley. Despite not having the full picture they continue to claim his actions were not those of a pedophile.

Perhaps I’m just skeptical and too much of a cynic. Maybe Foley is indeed just a “troubled and misguided” man. Maybe his “behaviour was a result of the molestation he suffered as a youth, but never acted upon them”, as his defense lawyer contends.

Let me take a moment and ponder those thoughts. ……Nah!, I’m definitely a cynic and a skeptic. I think Foley is nothing less than a bonafide pedophile. Although Foley was quick to resign and focus his attention on mounting a defense, he commited his crimes in a digital age and his troubles will undoubtebly continue, as more bits and bytes of his actions are revealed.

I have no doubt that despite Foley’s political connections in the end he will be punished. The rub is the unfairness that comes with the fact that Foley will never be punished as severely as a minority who commits a similar crime.

I hated the fact that I breathed a sigh of relief in the knowledge that this particular pedophile was just a White American man. I hate the fact that the increasing class and race divisions in America have come thus far.

Forgive me, but Anti-Illegal Immigrant groups already have way too much help from the GOP. The GOP and it’s immigration policies have contributed to why many average Americans blame most of the social ills in America on immigrants, especially illegal immigrants. I can’t believe I’m living in a time when I’m relieved at the fact that a criminal happens to be White rather than some immigrant. The fact that the criminal ends up not being an illegal immigrant is a major plus, if only because it forces a more balanced public opinion.

It serves the GOP right to have Foley be the reason they take a moment to pause, look over their shoulders for a criminal and see one of their own.
