Michel Gromek: “When I got out of the plane in Greensboro in the US state of North Carolina, I would never have expected my host family to welcome me at the airport, wielding a Bible, and saying, ‘Child, our Lord sent you half-way around the world to bring you to us.’ At that moment I just wanted to turn round and run back to the plane.” […]

That’s amazing and so true to the area. I love telling locals how I go to Buddhist Temples and Islamic Mosques to see their faces wrinkle with confusion. It’s sad when people believe so strongly that their way is the only way. They never stop to think what it’s like to be in the other persons shoes. If that family went overseas and had a religion forced upon them I don’t doubt they would have had a similar response of disbelief.

yeah, but that family will probably never travel out of the state.

Some families look for an opportunity to try and press their beliefs on exchange students. They probably feel like they’re doing the lords work.

You’re both right, and they’ve probably never been out of their county. You can’t force beliefs and ideas on people. You have to live it yourself and then they can make the choice through experiences and seeing real examples.
