quick thought... March 26th, 2007 - 2:37AM

Joe Guarino: […] “The appointment of David Wray’s successor this week, however, brought to mind yet another Tom Wolfe novel– A Man in Full. It is well known that Greensboro has a strong African-American political power structure, mostly embodied in the Simkins machine.” […] “The chief reports to the city manager, who in turn reports to the city council. The council has been populated by those who have been principals of the Simkins machine or who have sought and obtained its endorsement in the past. It has also been populated by white politicians representing development interests who must do business with this machine in order to get things done; and by liberals who attempt to express political virtue by working with it.” […]

Fec Stench: “Why don’t you put on hoods and set fire to a cross? I might expect this tripe from a dumb redneck, but to have to read it from another carpetbagger really chafes my hide.”

I was mostly angry because it was such a terrible post. How the sit in GSO can be compared to Wolfe’s A Man In Full is beyond me.

Chief Bellamy deserves a chance. If somebody’s got dirt on him, let’s see it. Lord knows we’ve got enough real criminal activity going on without having to imagine any.

    seriously.

this “knee bone is connected to the shin bone, the shin bone is connected to the ankle bone” doctor logic regarding how greensboro supposedly works is frightening.

as for the book, i’ve got to read it now. it’s about #12 in the never-ending queue.

Obviously, I liked the book. We go to Hotlanta alot and stand around all day hanging with the locals at the Apparel Mart. It’s also got a west coast character who discovers the Stoics. The get out the vote corruption supposedly present in downtown Atlanta is but one part of an outrageous story.

all i know about atlanta is that i thought of moving there in ‘93 and that it’s *really* hot.

Yeah, too hot. Strangely though, downtown always has a cool breeze. Of course, noone but the rich can live downtown. The traffic is like Charlotte X 5.

i’m used to traffic congestion and sweaty people all over each other (the nyc subway system in august is either an air conditioned dream or a nasty pit of body odor). i knida like the vibe of downtown greensboro. growth isn’t always the most desirable result.

Good point. The Wife has lived all over and came back to GSO ’cause it was just big enough to have the amenities without the probs of big cities. We’ve got something really special.

    we really do.

sure, there could be enhancements and improvements, but ben has his eye on the most needy ones around town. s. elm street isn’t a life and death situation… well, spare the retail shops that suffer from a lack of parking and foot traffic. they’ll die off one by one. but hey, that’s the beauty of a free market, right? another season, a new leaf…
