A New Republican

I highly doubt Ron Paul or Chuck Hagel will make it through the Republican primaries, but if one of them were to represent the GOP, I’d have a bunch to think about.

And Dave is right; what’s with the protective, uber-patriotic attitude projected by Wolf Blitzer? Who is he pandering to? Are there really Americans out there that still think that US foreign policy over the past 50 years — particularly policy regarding the Middle East — didn’t in the very least contribute to a perfect storm of blowback on 9/11?

It must be a comfy place to own a world view where the US government operates around the world (and at home) with pure, egalitarian intent.

UPDATE: Ron Paul was asking great questions regarding Iraq prior to Shock and Awe. (h/t to Doc Searls)

what’s with the protective, uber-patriotic attitude projected by Wolf Blitzer?

And what’s with the multi-screen display of Bin Laden and other presumed terrorists playing in the background while Ron Paul is speaking?

Ron Paul is appealing in some ways. And he comes across in this segment as a very reasonable and thoughtful guy (despite the best efforts of Wolf Blitzer to make him seem like a lunatic). Of course, there are many aspects of his right-libertarian ideology that I dislike. But, given that he’s never going to be the nominee anyway, I’m not so worried about that and hope he continues to get attention.

I’m far less sanguine about Hagel. It’s true that he’s taken a very good stance on the war, and I’m glad to see someone with solid conservative GOP bona fides doing so. But, on just about every issue other than the war, he is pretty horrible. And, unlike Ron Paul, Hagel actually does have some chance of being the nominee. In a Hagel-Clinton race, I’d have to throw up my hands in despair (and just plain throw up) and maybe write in Bugs Bunny.

As for Giuliani, he is, quite simply, an il Duce wannabe. Having lived in NY during his first term as Mayor (and having left NY in no small part because of what he was turning the City into), I can attest that his image as some kind of “moderate” is pure horseshit.

admittedly, i’m working backwards from the position of candidates being level-headed on iraq, so i don’t know much about paul and hagel’s positions aside from wanting to stop this war. but based on republican polling, neither of them have a shot in hell at the candidacy.

and yes, guilliani was a scumbag as mayor. he did whatever it took to “clean up” the city for disney to take over times square, sat idly as his cops murdered or assaulted unarmed black men and ran around town, cheating on his wife while posing for pictures with his kid.

the *only* thing he did on 9/11 was not get killed. with similar qualifications — being a resident of brooklyn on that day, whose office was a block away from the towers — maybe i should be running for president as well?

btw, checkout the update i just added — ron paul was asking no bullshit questions before the war ever began.
